How a Club Lunch Redeemed my Week

It’s been a stressful and, at times, brutal week for me, so I thought I’d end it on a lighter note—something positive.

My wife and I went out to lunch today at the Swordfish Club in Opua, near Paihia, here in the Bay of Islands.

It was, in short, perfect in every respect. I give it an unqualified 10 out of 10 for the food, the service, and the parking. And the toilets—or bathrooms, as you Americans are wont to say—are something to behold, especially if you’re standing there looking for something to hold.

Usually, once I’ve eaten, I’m beating a path to the door. I get bored quickly. But I was perfectly happy to stay at the Swordfish, chat with my wife, and take in the view. The view of the marina next door wasn’t bad either.

If you’re wondering about the price of all this, it came to $100 for two meals, a wine, and a beer—which is, I think, not too bad these days.

If you live in the Bay of Islands, I highly recommend the Swordfish Café in Opua (check the opening times; they’re a little weird). And if you live farther afield—say, Taranaki—come up here, and I’ll take you there.

It’s well worth the visit.
